Getting More Physically Active as a Writer

While writing can undoubtedly be a very fun and rewarding activity to pursue — and can involve getting lost in the art of crafting a compelling narrative — writers aren’t necessarily known for being the most physically active individuals out there.

If you’re a writer and find that you end up spending a disproportionate amount of your time in a sedentary manner, here are a few tips and suggestions for getting more physically active.

Avoid falling into the trap of working all day in front of a computer, and relaxing all night in front of a computer

For writers — much like for coders and other professionals whose jobs involve working on a computer the whole time — there’s a very real risk of falling into the trap of working all day in front of one screen, and then sitting in front of another screen to decompress.

The end result can easily become that you do little other than sit in front of your computer throughout your days, your evenings, and even your weekends.

The first step to being more active as a writer is to be sure to pick up certain hobbies and activities that take place away from a screen or digital device.

These hobbies could include things like gardening, hiking, signing up for a dance or martial arts class, or a wide range of other things. Just so long as you’ve got things to do that involve getting active in the world at large.

Do a regular workout that helps to improve your flexibility and posture

As a general rule, every different workout style will have its particular pros and cons. Doing intense weight training workouts and supporting them with things like Steel Supplements can help you to build strength and size. Going jogging can help to develop your cardiovascular health. And so on.

As a writer, though, the types of workout routines that you are most likely to benefit from will include those that help to improve flexibility and posture — and that help you to address the kinds of muscular imbalances that can come from sitting at a desk for long stretches of the day in a relatively static position.

Yoga and Pilates workouts are likely to prove quite helpful here.

Brainstorm ideas while out on strolls

As a writer, there’s a good chance that you will need to brainstorm ideas from time to time in order to move forward with a given project, advance the plot of a novel, or any number of other things.

Instead of sitting still at home trying to think of new ideas, why not go out for a stroll instead?

Often, going for a stroll can help ideas to flow much more readily — and walking around outdoors in the fresh air can also do a lot of good for your sense of wellbeing, and for your health, too.
